BISHU: Sekai de Ichiban Yasashii Fuku (2024)

I loved this movie the first time I saw the trailer and I knew I had to sub it. And here I am, finally finished after sooooo many days of subbing. I still have no idea how I managed to figure out so many lines, it's kinda incredible. I kept jumping from different sections hoping they'd help me figure out what the characters could have meant because I didn't get some things after I watched it. Little by little, I managed to complete it. There are still some lines I'm not so sure about and some I filled based on the words I could hear and the overall context, but like 99% of it should be correct. I'll do corrections if Japanese captions ever surface for this movie, but for now it seems unlikely.

Translation notes

The movie is set in Ichinomiya City, central to the Bishu region. Bishu (尾州) is a region that comes from historical Owari Province (尾張国). One of the reasons this area's textile production flourished is Kiso River which flows through Nagano, Aichi, Gifu and Mie prefectures. Bishu region is said to account for up to 80% of domestic wool production (sometimes they state 60-70%).

Rina's gang refer to Shiori as General Curriculum, but I thought Walking Curriculum was a good fit since she's very good at memorizing stuff.

8:49 timestamp: no idea what kanji they used and that scene could have a few other explanations, but I think Kamiya scripture was a good fit. Since I'm earsubbing, I just settled for that.

I used "Studies" for the general curriculum and fashion, but you can imagine them as specialization or courses of study within the same school. 

The name of the Hatori Shrine in Ichinomiya comes from 服織 (clothes + weaving kanji) which is different from modern Japanese as weaving is usually represented by 機織 or 機織り. The clothes kanji was replaced by the loom kanji (機) while the weaving kanji remained. This is because in the past there were no devices such as looms and weaving was done by hand or other means.

Most of the locations in the movie are in Ichinomiya City:

• Shiori's name has the kanji for weaving (織).
• Fumi's name, which can also be read as Nunomi, has the kanji for cloth/fabric (布) and beauty (美), so "beautiful in cloth".
• Yasutaka's name has the kanji for filial piety (孝), which I found kinda funny and fitting.
• Shiori's aunt has the kanji for calm in her name (静).

Shiori's designs are inspired by Tanabata festival (Japanese Star Festival) and Orihime. Orihime was a Weaving Princess who fell in love with Hikoboshi (Boy Star). You can read more about the story here.

For explanation of differences between twill, plain and satin weave, I suggest this article. It explains better than I ever could.

Floating (length of yarn with out interlacement) creates smooth lustrous surface of the warp (satin) or weft (sateen) on the face side of the fabric.

I chose dice bread instead of diced bread because diced sounds so wrong. In case you didn't catch it, this is what it looks like. Also the name CROCE comes from CROCE & Co. (chain of cafés) - one of the sponsors of the movie.

During the awards ceremony, there were 3 prizes - Shiori's first place (Award of Excellence), Rina's quasi-second place (Bravo Award) and Consolation Prize.

For the herringbone lines, I modified the first one so it makes more sense.

No idea about the sponsor line at 1:35:02. All I could hear was Youren-chan, but I don't think it's that. I couldn't find the sponsor in the credits either. So in the end, I just put it as "Considering who the sponsor is."

It's implied at the end considering the color of Mitsuru's vest that they made that new vest for him with the left-over fabric.
